Voice is a grammatical category that applies to verbs. Voice expresses the relationship of the subject to the action.
In a sentence written in the active voice, the subject of sentence performs the action stated by the verb.. In a sentence written in the passive voice the subject receives the action.
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. Sometimes it is not important or not known who or what is performing the action.

Active voice: William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet in 1602

Passive voice: Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare in 1602

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, follow these rules:

  • the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
  • the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
  • the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)
